During the past 11+ years that I’ve been an Avon Ambassador, I’ve learned a few things about what it takes to be successful.
In this post, I’m going to outline five elements, which I have found to be essential to success.
- CONNECTIONS – FILL YOUR FUNNEL
Success with Avon (or many businesses, for that matter) has a lot to do with making connections.
Some connections may quickly become customers, some may take more time and repeated exposure to what you have to offer, and some will never become customers. This is all normal. At the end of the day, the more connections you make, the more potential customers you’ll have.
Think of your business as a funnel. You want to add as many people as you can at the top of the funnel to increase the flow of customers from the bottom.
We can connect with potential customers in all sorts of ways, in-person and/or online. Start by identifying the connections you already have, then expand that list even further by thinking of the people they may be able to connect you with. Think about people you know through hobbies, your workplace, your neighborhood, and your daily errands. Think about the people you know online. Join new clubs, groups, and activities (both in-person and online) which are interesting to you. Connect with people who share those common interests. Wear Avon products to spark conversation while you’re out and about (collect contact info from your new connections). Look into opportunities like vendor events where you can connect with many people about Avon in a short, focused period of time.
Make it your mission to consistently build your list of connections, then look for the right opportunities to share Avon with them.
- RINSE & REPEAT
Success with your Avon business doesn’t happen as the result of one or two isolated actions. Success happens through small repeated actions carried out over time.
It’s a fact that it takes most people several “touchpoints” with a new product or service before they’re ready to take action. Every action we take to promote and share our business becomes a touchpoint. Posting your online store link is a touchpoint, sharing a brochure is a touchpoint, sending a text with a coupon code is a touchpoint, posting a picture of a product you’re personally loving is a touchpoint, wearing a piece of Avon jewelry that people see is a touchpoint. No single one of these actions is the thing that brings in the sales. The sales come from an accumulation of ALL of these things. The more touchpoints you provide, the faster you’ll convert connections into customers.
TIP: If you post your link or message a few people or pass out a couple brochures and the sales don’t immediately come rolling in, DO NOT make the assumption that those people are not interested in Avon ~ they may just need more touchpoints. Continue posting, sharing, and promoting your Avon business ~ especially the products you personally love.
- TIME – THE SNOWBALL EFFECT
The longer you stick with your Avon business, consistently offering those essential touchpoints, the more momentum your business with gain and the faster it can grow.
Think of your business like a snowball. It starts small, but once you start rolling it, it becomes bigger. At first the growth is small, as there is little surface area for the new snow to cling onto, but if you continue pushing that snowball along, the growth exponentially increases as the new snow has so much more surface area to cling to!
Give your Avon business time to gain that growth momentum!
- KEEP YOUR “OPEN” SIGN LIT
Looks for ways to consistently let people know that you are open for business.
Imagine a store in your neighborhood with nothing in the display window, no hours posted, lights off, door closed. Occasionally they stick an item in the window for people to view. Sometimes that store turns on the lights and appears open. Would you make an effort to go visit that shop?
Probably not, right? It’s too hard to tell if it’s open and harder to know if they even sell something you might like.
If you want people to shop with you, make it obvious that your shop is open and make it easy for people to shop with you. Make your business visible. Put your online store link in your “About” info on social media, add it to your signature on emails. Post routinely on social media to showcase what you have to offer and remind potential customers that you’re open for business. Have brochures and/or business cards (with your online store link on them) ready to share. Keep that “Open” sign lit at all times (and flashing, if possible)! When people think of Avon, you want them to think of YOU!
- PLAY SHOW & TELL… A LOT
The best way to get people to shop is by sharing the things you personally use and love. Your authentic testimonial is your most valuable sales tool.
Think about it this way… If you were to go out to dinner at a new restaurant in town and had a incredible experience (great food, excellent service, comfortable atmosphere, the works…), you’d probably tell other people about it, right? You might chat about it with neighbors or coworkers. Maybe you’d even post a crave-worthy food pic on social media with a comment raving about this great new place.
Now consider, if you were on the receiving end of this rave review, what would you do?? You’d probably feel compelled to give that restaurant a try, right?!?
It’s really no different with our Avon businesses. If you post about and talk about the products you truly love and share your authentic experience with people, they’re probably gonna feel compelled to give some things a try!
Try some products for yourself, get to know the things you’re selling firsthand, then (repeatedly, since you know how important those “touchpoints” are) share what you love with all of those connections you’ve been making.
TO RECAP, FIVE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF AVON SUCCESS ARE:
- Make Connections
- Rinse & Repeat – Provide multiple “touchpoints”
- Give it Time
- Make Yourself Visible – Keep your “open” sign lit
- Show & Tell
